📖 About Flight Emissions

How is this calculated?

The calculator uses the great-circle distance between airports and aircraft-specific fuel burn rates. Jet fuel combustion produces approximately 2.52 kg CO₂ per liter of fuel burned. The total CO₂ is then divided by typical seat count to give per-passenger figures.

Important: Actual emissions can be 20-40% higher due to:

  • Non-CO₂ effects (contrails, NOₓ, soot) at altitude
  • Extra fuel for taxi, takeoff, climb, and holding patterns
  • Headwinds and routing inefficiencies
  • Cargo weight and lower-than-full passenger loads

The RFI (Radiative Forcing Index) multiplier of ~1.9-2.0 is often applied to account for non-CO₂ effects, meaning the total climate impact is roughly double the CO₂ alone.
